 Foot Pain ~ Tips for Foot Care ~ Why Choose Moisture Wicking Athletic Apparel

Foot Pain.  Shoes make the outfit. We kick off our shoes or sandals when we get home. Somewhere in between putting on shoes and taking them off, we can experience foot pain that’s preventable. If you have foot pain, assess your symptoms to understand your foot pain diagnosis. Below are some common ailments people experience:

Athlete's Foot. Fungus on the foot (usually between the toes or on the bottom of the feet) that causes redness, itchiness, tiny bumps filled with fluid, or peeling skin. A common skin condition that can affect everyone, not just athletes. It is most commonly located between the toes or on the bottom of the feet.

Cause: Coming in contact with fungus and grows best in warm, moist areas, such as the area between the toes.

Bunion. A pathological bump on the side of the big toe caused by an enlargement of bone or tissue around the joint. With a bunion, you may experience irritated skin around the bunion, pain when walking, joint redness and pain, and possible shift of the big toe toward the other toes. Blisters may form more easily around the site of the bunion as well.

Cause: Depending on factors such as duration of wearing constraining footwear, skeletal maturity, and individual factors, the toes can become adapted to the new position and lead to the deformity we know as a bunion. Genetics can also play a role in developing bunions.

Corns & Callouses. Areas of thick, hard skin. Corns are hard, thick skin that forms on your toe, while a callous is thick, hard skin that has forms elsewhere on your foot.

Cause: Usually caused by rubbing or irritation over a boney prominence.

Hammertoe. An imbalance of the tendons (either above or below the toe) causing toe(s) to curl. Also called a mallet toe.

Cause: Wearing improper footwear — shoes that are too tight in the toe box or shoes that have high heels. Genetics can also play a role in developing a hammertoe.

Ingrown Toenail. The sides or corners of the toenail usually curve down and put pressure on the skin. Sometimes the toenail pierces the skin and then continues to grow into the skin. This may cause redness, swelling, pain and sometimes infection.

Cause: Many factors can cause ingrown toenails, one being tight or narrow shoes (poorly fitted shoes)

Plantar Fascitis. The most common cause of foot pain in the heel and foot pain in the arch. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the thick fibrous band of tissue that connects from your heel to your toes (plantar facsia) becomes week, irritated or swollen. It has been reported that plantar fasciitis occurs in two million Americans a year and 10% of the population over a lifetime.

Cause: Several causes including wearing shoes that don't fit well or are worn out.

Metatarsalgia. An imbalance in the long bones of the foot that can cause extreme foot pain in the ball of feet.

Cause: Sports that place tremendous pounding on the ball of the foot; shoes with small toe boxes that cramp your toes.

Most, if not all, of the above foot pain issues can arise by not wearing proper shoes and not using preventative steps in foot care.

If you feel any foot pain, it’s important to determine the cause and the proper foot care steps. Many times we take our feet for granted, but using proper foot care leads to good foot health which supports whole-body wellness.

Foot Care Tips

With feet flat, lift and spread your toes. Repeat 10 times. Move your feet in the fight direction! Image courtesy of allwomenstalk.com Now curl your toes under as though you were raking leaves with them. Repeat 10 times. Stand on a hard surface with your toes on the edge of a hand towel. Gather the towel under the arch of your foot with your toes. Lift your big toe, keeping the littlest toe down flat. Repeat 10 times. Reverse the previous exercise and lift your little toe, leaving the big toe down. Repeat 10 times. To stretch, sit on the edge of a chair with a firm seat. Bring your foot onto the opposite knee and pull all the toes down with your hand until you feel a gentle stretch. Then push the toes up. Stand or sit on the edge of a chair. Press into your toes, lifting the heel until you feel a stretch in the arch of the foot. Put the tops of your toes on the ground and gently press forward until you feel a stretch in the top of the foot.

Diabetic Foot Care:

While several risk factors increase a person with diabetes chances of developing diabetes foot care problems, poorly fitting shoes are a common cause. Some of the warning signs of foot health issues include:

If the patient has red spots, sore spots, blisters, corns, calluses, or consistent pain associated with wearing poorly-fitting shoes If the patient has common foot abnormalities such as flat feet, bunions, or hammertoes Poor circulation slow rate of healing and can lead to accelerated hardening of the arteries or atherosclerosis Athlete's foot, a fungal infection of the skin or toenails, can lead to more serious bacterial infections Ingrown toenails

Diabetes Foot Care Tips:

Foot examination: Examine your feet daily and also after any trauma, no matter how minor, to your feet. Report any abnormalities to your physician. Use a water-based moisturizer every day (but not between your toes) to prevent dry skin and cracking. Wear cotton or wool socks. Avoid elastic socks and hosiery because they may impair circulation. Eliminate obstacles: Move or remove any items you are likely to trip over or bump your feet on. Keep clutter on the floor picked up. Light the pathways used at night - indoors and outdoors. Toenail trimming: Always cut your nails with a safety clipper, never a scissors. Cut them straight across and leave plenty of room out from the nailbed or quick. If you have difficulty with your vision or using your hands, let your doctor do it for you or train a family member how to do it safely. Footwear: Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes whenever feasible to protect your feet. To be sure your shoes fit properly. Exercise: Regular exercise will improve bone and joint health in your feet and legs, improve circulation to your legs, and will also help to stabilize your blood sugar levels. Consult your physician prior to beginning any exercise program. Smoking: If you smoke any form of tobacco, quitting can be one of the best things you can do to prevent problems with your feet. Smoking accelerates damage to blood vessels, especially small blood vessels leading to poor circulation, which is a major risk factor for foot infections and ultimately amputations. Diabetes control: Following a reasonable diet, taking your medications, checking your blood sugar regularly, exercising regularly, and maintaining good communication with your physician are essential in keeping your diabetes under control. Consistent long-term blood sugar control to near normal levels can greatly lower the risk of damage to your nerves, kidneys, eyes, and blood vessels.
